Sister of My Heart is a story which tells of love, loyalty, suffering, crushed expectations, family, strength in unity, the power of women among other themes. The story revolves around the lives of two cousins- Anju and Sudha. Divakaruni allows us to grow with them from childhood, through their teens up until they get married. In the alternating style that Divakaruni chooses Anju and Sudha allow us a glimpse into their lives each telling the story from their perspective. These wonderful story-tellers teach us lessons about Indian oral traditions, rituals, food, marital arrangements among others.

Although the challenges that Anju and Sudha’s family face are commonplace, they are relatable. One clear theme that resonated with me as I read the novel was crushed hopes and dreams. I was nostalgic as I read about their dreams and hopes about the future which they shared with each other with so much certainty…
